The academic messaging system of Créteil is based on an address in the format [email protected], automatically assigned to each staff member of the academy. This mailbox allows for receiving institutional communications, exchanging with rectoral services, and accessing the ministry’s business applications. Since the beginning of 2026, a gradual migration to a shared national messaging system is changing connection habits and the technical parameters to be aware of.

Migration to messagerie.education.gouv.fr: what changes concretely

The Créteil academy is gradually transitioning from the old local webmail (webmel.ac-creteil.fr) to the national platform accessible at messagerie.education.gouv.fr. Both entry points coexist during the transition period, but accounts that have already migrated must use the new URL.

The change is not limited to the connection address. Several functions that were previously available have been restricted or removed for migrated accounts. Staff who were still using the old interface may notice differences in ergonomics, folder management, and filtering options.

To find out if your account has already switched, try logging in at messagerie.education.gouv.fr with your usual academic credentials. If access works, your migration is effective. Otherwise, continue using webmel.ac-creteil.fr until the complete switch. A detailed guide on the webmail of Créteil academy provides the connection steps for each situation.

Academic ID and password: resolving connection issues

The login ID generally corresponds to the first letter of the first name followed by the last name, all in lowercase. For individuals with the same name, a number is added. This format can pose problems for staff who have changed their name or who have a hyphenated first name.

The ID recovery page on the ADN portal of the Créteil academy (adn.ac-creteil.fr) allows you to retrieve your ID using the NUMEN. This unique identification number appears on appointment orders and pay slips.

Resetting a forgotten password

The procedure goes through the academy’s password management portal. Two scenarios arise:

  • If a backup email address has been provided beforehand, a reset link is automatically sent there. The new password must comply with the complexity rules imposed by the ministry.
  • If no backup email address exists, you must contact the academic support platform by providing your NUMEN and an ID. The processing time can take several days during the back-to-school period.
  • For accounts that have already migrated to the national messaging system, the reset is done directly on the Arena portal or through the ministry’s single window, no longer on the local Créteil portal.

Providing a backup email address before any blockage remains the most effective precaution. This operation takes a few seconds in the account settings.

Security restrictions on forwarding and IMAP access

Many staff had gotten used to automatically forwarding their academic emails to a personal Gmail or Outlook inbox. This practice was disabled in July 2025 by the Créteil academy, for reasons of GDPR compliance and data security.

The removal of forwarding means that it is no longer possible to passively receive academic emails in a public messaging service. You must now check the webmail directly or configure a compatible email client.

Setting up an email client on smartphone or computer

For accounts not yet migrated, IMAP configuration remains possible with the following settings:

  • Incoming IMAP server: imaps.ac-creteil.fr, port 993, SSL/TLS encryption
  • Outgoing SMTP server: smtps.ac-creteil.fr, port 465, SSL/TLS encryption
  • ID: your full academic ID ([email protected])

On iPhone, the configuration is done in Settings, then Mail, then Accounts. On Android devices, the Gmail app or any other compatible client accepts these settings by choosing the account type “Other”.

POP/IMAP access has been partially disabled since September 2025 for accounts that have already migrated to the national messaging system. If your email client suddenly refuses to connect, first check if your account has switched to messagerie.education.gouv.fr before looking for a technical issue on your device.

Two-factor authentication and protection of the academic account

Recent guides from the academy explicitly recommend activating two-factor authentication on email accounts. This mechanism adds an extra verification step (code sent via SMS or generated by an app) during each login from a new device.

Activation is done in the account security settings, accessible from the management portal. The choice between SMS and authentication app (FreeOTP, Microsoft Authenticator) depends on personal equipment. The app remains more reliable in areas with poor network coverage.

This recommendation takes on particular significance after the cyberattack that affected the Ministry of National Education in August 2026. Several academies experienced disruptions to their tools, with some staff temporarily losing access to their email. An account protected by two-factor authentication is more resilient to password compromise, even in the event of a large-scale attack.

The daily management of the academic messaging system of Créteil can be summarized in three reflexes: regularly check if the migration to the national platform is effective for your account, keep a backup email address updated in your settings, and activate two-factor authentication. These precautions take a few minutes and prevent blockage situations that, during the back-to-school period, can last several days before being resolved by support services.
